Valmark Art Guidelines

Applications:
Although we have access to several applications, for quality reasons we recommend the following applications listed below. Both Macintosh and PC files are readily accepted (except where noted):

Vector Drawing programs

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • MacroMedia Freehand
  • CorelDraw

Page Layout programs

  • Quark Xpress
  • Adobe PageMaker (Mac)

Raster image editing

  • Adobe PhotoShop

Font issues are the most common interruption when using electronic art from our customers. To avoid this, we recommend converting all text as "paths" or "outlines", and saved as an illustration . This simple procedure allows art files to be used without the need for transferring fonts with your art files, as well as maintaining the accuracy of your files.
If you prefer to supply fonts, be sure to include all screen and printer fonts used with your documents. Postscript fonts are the standard for the graphics industry. PC fonts should be True Type fonts (.ttf).

Valmark does not recommend files created in drafting programs (i.e..dxf, .dwg) as artwork. Experience indicates that this often produces unpredictable results creating production delays and excessive costs. If there is no alternative, Valmark will attempt to convert these types of files. Cost of conversion to be quoted according to the specific job.

If you are using an application not listed, it is best to export (or save as ) your file as a vector based .eps file. More than likely, Valmark will be able to utilize the file in this format.
For Raster images ( .tif, .jpg, .bmp, .gif ), we recommend 300 dpi or more for the best quality results.

When supplying art that uses "placed / embedded" image files, remember to include them with the original file.

Hard copy proofs or prints are essential for ensuring accuracy throughout the production run. Every electronic file should be accompanied by a hard copy proof, submitted by fax or mail. Color printouts are preferred to accurately depict color breaks and address any trapping concerns. The more information provided on the print, the easier the production flow will be.
All four color process jobs must include a Match Print, Color Key, or Cromalin¨ copy of the desired appearance of the finished product.
